In celebration of National Disability Employment Awareness Month and Michigan State Employees with Disabilities Awareness Month

OVERVIEW

Three events in one:

• The Business of Careers: A dialogue between (a) professionals responsible for recruiting and selecting people for state careers and (b) professionals responsible for placing people with disabilities into careers.
  
• Medical Ethics: An exploration of how the art, science and business of medicine shapes social policy (and career opportunities) for people with disabilities.
  
• Individual Career Advancement: A ‘how to' on leveraging your disability experience (or a family member's or a client's) to maximize career options via optimizing health and wellness, managing state insurance and support services, and networking the three disability inner circles.

That Morning (9:30 – 11:30): The Business of Careers -

a dialogue between (a) professionals responsible for recruiting and selecting people for state careers and (b) professionals responsible for placing people with disabilities into careers.

•  Michigan's largest employer anticipates major shifts in its workforce.

•  State Personnel Director Stephens outlines the shifts and the strategic response.

•  Placement and recruitment professionals share success stories and then identify policy and practice improvements needed for the future.

Over Lunch (11:30 – 1:15): Sandwich, Salad, and Salaries

•  Alice Dreger, Professor of Medical Humanities and Bioethics at Northwestern explores how the art, science and business of medicine shapes social policy (and career opportunities) for people with disabilities.

That Afternoon (1:15 – 3:30): Managing Careers –

‘how to' leverage disability experience (yours, a family member's, or a client's) to enhance and advance careers in state service.

•  Candice Lee, Community Health explodes disability health and wellness myths.
•  Seasoned employees give concrete advice on using the three disability networks within state government.
•  Someone explains how to play the Disability as Diversity Card.
